Data Methodology

“Searching for an end to racial injustice” is a film rooted in Google Trends data that surfaces the unprecedented degree to which America is questioning and challenging racial injustice. Notably, the data is showing a very recent mainstream awakening to race issues at large, meaning that many of these queries were not highly searched over time, but that in itself is an important insight to capture, and it is the message at the heart of the film; the world is waking up to the many underlying systemic issues and manifestations of racism in our country. The film features Search insights that were breakout1 terms or hit an all-time high in the last 30 days (May 22 - June 22, 2020). Additionally—using Google’s proprietary internal tools—each query was required to meet a minimum threshold of search interest in the last 30 days to qualify for the film.
