How the Museum of Chinese in America is preserving Chinese American art, heirlooms, and artifacts
With help from Google Arts & Culture
With over 85,000 artifacts in its collection, NYC’s Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) exists to provide a better understanding of Chinese culture and its impact on US history.
From art to heirlooms, 200 years worth of Chinese American history was almost lost when a fire struck MOCA in 2020.
“The fear of [MOCA] disappearing is the fear of not only our own history vanishing but also the history of this country that hasn’t been yet told.”
Nancy Yao, President of MOCA
To digitally preserve these cultural treasures, MOCA partnered with Google Arts & Culture to bring hundreds of Chinese American artifacts online.
Anyone anywhere in the world can now explore MOCA’s online exhibits, including ‘Trial by Fire’ which documents the museum's race to rescue and repair their collection.
“Creating inclusive and immersive exhibits with MOCA allows people to see the diverse experiences of Chinese Americans.”
Ashley Do, Product Inclusion Lead, Asian Googler Network
With MOCA's collection now preserved online, future generations can access irreplaceable items and artifacts from Chinese American culture.
